Government blocks Ngong Road Forest development
In a decisive move to protect environmental conservation, the government has halted controversial development plans in Ngong Road Forest that would have seen the protected area transformed into a golf range and restaurant complex.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale took swift action by revoking all development licenses and ordering an immediate investigation into how the permits were initially granted. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has also suspended the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license that had been issued for the project.
"We will not allow any form of forest encroachment," stated Duale, responding to significant public outcry over the proposed development. The controversy has placed both the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and NEMA under scrutiny, with questions arising about the approval process for construction in protected forest areas.
Environmental activists and concerned citizens played a crucial role in bringing attention to the issue, leading to the government's intervention. The public opposition highlighted growing awareness about the importance of preserving Kenya's forest cover and natural heritage.
In response to the situation, KFS has issued a stern warning to potential land grabbers, emphasizing the protected status of Ngong Forest. The service has committed to enhanced surveillance and protection of the forest area to prevent future encroachment attempts.
This development marks a significant victory for environmental conservation efforts in Kenya, setting a precedent for the protection of forest lands against commercial interests. The ongoing investigation into the permit issuance process is expected to reveal potential gaps in the system and lead to stronger protective measures for Kenya's forest resources.
