Welcome to the BreakRoom

Do any of these questions come to mind when you hear the word ‘news’:

  • Is it relevant to me?
  • Will I enjoy reading it?
  • Will I understand it?
  • Is it worth the time or should I just trust what my friend said about it?
  • Can I do anything about it?

We're a group of problem solvers who live by the statement, "Be the change you wish to see". Proposing lasting solutions to national issues starts with knowing what they are and sticking with change requires monitoring progress.

We began driving change by helping others re-engage with the news and are using our collective skills to build BreakRoom.

BreakRoom is a collection of written publications that elicit conversations to spark individual & systemic change.

We blend traditional journalism & modern media with independent perspectives from experts and our readers across two types of newsletters:

  • Industry Newsletters: We curate news stories and deliver them in a dedicated “This Week In:” newsletter. We currently host:
    • This Week In: Education
    • This Week In: Public Health
  • Independent Newsletters: Unique perspectives by individual writers who share domain knowledge, personal insights and anecdotes on the week’s news. We currently host:
    • WaitingRoom (Mental Health)
    • StrongRoom (Investing)
7 days in 7 minutes across different sectors

Our mission is to reframe people’s relationship with news as an enjoyable resource.

We envision a world where news, however complex, can translate into immediate change driven by our community of thinkers who pioneer solutions to "impossible" social issues.

BreakRoom is the place you come to long after the headlines break to help you shape your individual opinion on the world around you.

We help you make sense of the news & do something about it.

Asking and answering the tough questions
Lots of civic engagement witnessed online over the past week as people educate each other on different aspects of the Finance Bill. There’s hope as patients living with chronic illness are catered for in the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and a new drug tested in Uganda prevents 100%

“People experience symptoms, not a diagnosis” - Matteo Grassi Matteo is a tech innovator living with bipolar disorder, and his words are a great reminder that bipolar is a description, not an identity. He’s currently building a community for other people living with bipolar and I am proud to know
The people have spoken
Widespread protests against the Finance Bill reached a new peak across Kenya as the government looked for concessions too little too late. Some tax exemptions were rejected and now, much hangs in the balance for a government that has boxed itself into an unenviable position. Meanwhile Tanzania got a double
